Lib Dems present 100,000 strong petition to Downing Street

Despite extensive lobbying by the Liberal Democrats over the past two months, Patricia Hewitt, the Trade and Industry Minister, has decided to continue with plans to close South Knighton Post Office and ignore the wishes of local residents.

The Post Office, on Knighton Church Road, is due to close on 18th September. But there have been cases where the Government have reversed decisions to close Post Offices in other parts of the country following pressure from local politicians and residents.

Newly elected Lib Dem MP, Parmjit Singh Gill, said: "This has been the number one issue raised with me on the doorstep over the past few weeks in this part of the constituency. So I will be collecting signatures to show the strength of feeling in the area.

"I have written to Patricia Hewitt urging her to change her mind. I hope for once 'Post Office Pat' and her Labour government will listen to local residents. They can't afford to lose this vital service."
