The fine for dropping litter in the City Centre will rise by £25, the increase will cover the cost of taking litter bugs to court.

The increase comes after it emerged that the taxpayer was paying nearly £6 million a year to help clean up the City Centre streets.

Lib Dem city centre councillor, Debbie Almey said, "I am proud of our City Centre, its a pity that the odd few spoil the look of the City by dropping litter," and then added, "I hope the extra £25 will deter people from spoiling our streets."

850 fines have been handed out since litter wardens were introduced in 2003.
