Visual Awareness on City Centre Streets3.18.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 11th Sep 2008
Leicester South Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Parmjit Singh Gill joined Ian Bradwell and other members of the Leicester Access Group to see for himself the hidden dangers that could trip up visually impaired people in Leicester City Centre. Disability Awareness campaigner Ian Bradwell came up with the idea after Lib Dem Freemen Ward Councillor, Dale Keeling, volunteered to take part in an disability awareness class at Vista in July of this year. Ian Bradwell said, "It was great that Dale took the first step for councillors but I wanted to go further and show local MPs and Prospective MPs the hidden dangers visually impaired people face on just a short walk." Parmjit Singh Gill chatted with MP Peter Soulsby and Ian Bradwell on the walk, he said, "Our eyesight is so important and is taken for granted by many. Street furniture such as bins, benches and scaffolding all provide hidden dangers for visually impaired people." Parmjit Singh Gill had to wear special glasses to block out his sight and walk with a stick.
