A £25,000 overhaul on the Arch of Remembrance in Victoria Park is being brought forward.

Lib Dem run Leicester City Council said the memorial - erected in tribute to the 12,000 men who died in World War One - will have clean up work completed in time for the 90th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, on July 1st. A clean-up operation will also be carried out in time for the annual Remembrance Sunday ceremony.

Work is also planned to tackle fading paintwork on the iron railings surrounding the memorial.

Cllr Debbie Almey, the Lib Dem councillor for Castle Ward said, "The memorial was due for a overhaul next year, however, I am glad that the City Council are bringing the work forward."
