Cllr. Hussein Suleman has issued a warning for Stoneygate residents on his website about bogus callers.

Bogus callers are people who knock on your front door unannounced, with the intention of tricking their way into your home to steal money or valuables. Bogus callers may be smartly dressed and claim convincingly to be from the council, water and energy companies, however It is important to remember that all genuine Leicester City Council staff will always carry an official form of identification when they call.

People can take the following simple steps to help prevent them falling victim to bogus callers or distraction burglary:

•Check you back door, lock it and remove the key

•If you have a door bar or chain on the front door - use it

•Check that the caller is genuine. Ask to see some identification - even if you are expecting the caller - and feel free to call the council to check that they are who they say they are.

•If you are unsure, ask them to call back later when there is someone with you, or when you have had time to check that they are genuine.

If you think a bogus caller has called at your door, report it to the police immediately - dial 999 and tell them what happened.
