Councillor Attends Protest Against EDL
Freemen Ward Lib Dem City Councillor Dale Keeling joined the protest against the EDL march in Leicester on Saturday.
Police say about 1,700 people had been involved in the protest in Leicester city centre. About 1,000 English Defence League supporters demonstrating at Humberstone Gate East, with about 700 members of Unite Against Fascism involved in a counter-protest. Dale Keeling said, "I believe in the freedom of speech but I feel the EDL are wasting their time in Leicester, Leicester is a unique City that not just multi-cultural but inter-cultral, we mix together, police have made arrests and I'm pleased to say not one have come from the City, that says a lot." He went on to say that the Police did a professional job at controlling the event.
Nearly every shop in Humberstone Gate East was boarded up and many other city centre stores stayed closed. Local press have stated that at the Haymarket centre, 13,500 people visited, compared with a normal Saturday's total of 65,000.
