County Council Election Results Round Up

After weeks of knocking on doors and delivering leaflets, Leicestershire residents finally had their vote on who they think should be running the council. The votes were cast on 2nd May, the results counted the following day.

The good:

• Where we had the resources to run a strong campaign, we either won or came a close second.
• The Liberal Democrats remain the leading opposition party on the Council.
• We held the vast majority of our seats, despite a difficult national scene.
• The BNP didn't win a seat this time.
• Many of our candidates increased their majorities, including one who achieved a fantastic 63% of the vote!

The disappointing:

• We lost a seat in Birstall and missed capturing Harborough West and Foxton by just 18 votes!
• The Conservatives retained full control of the Council.
• Where we didn't have the resources to fight a strong campaign, our share of the vote reduced.

It's always difficult to fight an election as a party in government.
Voters often punish you for difficult decisions made on the day.
It's a tribute to the hard work of our Councillors that they continue to keep the trust of their local electorate in these hard times.

Now it's for us to reward that trust by doing a thorough job in constructively scrutinising the Conservative controlled Council.
