Elected Mayor for Leicester - Whats Your View?

The Government have announced plans to ask Leicester and 11 other cities to hold a referendum on having an elected mayor.

If Leicester decided it wanted a mayor, that person would have more powers than the current directly-elected leaders already in situ across the country. The new batch of potential mayors would have decision-making powers on areas, such as transport, regeneration and the environment but would be answerable to the city council.

Mayors usually choose a cabinet, and council meetings are directed by a chairman. Since 2001, there have been 37 referendums by English councils - with 12 resulting in the election of mayors.
