Jubilee Square - asset or vanity project?

Shortly after her Majesty visited Leicester the elected mayor of the city declared he would be creating a commorative public square to mark the occasion at the top of High Street, at a cost of approximately £4m.

The space will feature landscaped gardens with benches, trees and outdoor cafes. It will replace a taxi rank and park & ride stop, which will be relocated, and a car park.

The taxi rank and park & ride stop that the square will replace was completed only two years ago, at a cost of £1.8m.

Madness or vanity? Or does labour in Leicester have really short memories?

In 1994 the labour led council announced that the car park would be turned into "an attractive public square". The mayor was leader of the council from 1995 to 1999 - 18 years on and nothing has changed. Still the grand announcements of how they can spend local taxpayers money.
