Labour Admits Failure on Laptop Promise

Labour Fail — Councillor Peter Coley, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group said, "It has been clear for some time that the promise to give every child a laptop in the City was un-realistic and nothing more than just an election gimmick."

The Leicester Labour Party pledge to give laptop access to every primary school child in the city in 2007 is set to be scrapped.

According to local press, the proposed scheme for 25,000 children has been watered down twice. Labour Councillors earlier in the year gave the go-ahead to spend £630,000 of taxpayers money in providing laptops to ten schools and later today the City Council's ruling Labour cabinet will likely cut that amount to £370,000, to be spent on just five schools, over three years.

However, a Labour Councillor has been quoted in local press as saying the scheme should now be scrapped completely.
