Leicester Labour’s lockdown crisis. City Mayor admits visiting partner. Apologises but will not resign.

As the row concerning breaking lockdown regulations entered a second day in Leicester, Sir Peter Soulsby, the Labour Leicester City Mayor this morning apologised for visiting his partners home outside the city in an interview on local radio after revelations came to light yesterday in a Sun on Sunday newspaper exclusive.

After several printed articles yesterday, Councillor Nigel Porter of Aylestone Ward responded in a BBC Radio Leicester interview:

"One rule for us and a second for those people at the top. His actions have attempted to mislead the people and media in Leicester about what has gone on and also has no consideration for the importance of the lockdown and that the lockdown was actually put in place to stop the spread of a dangerous virus which has killed more than 40,000 people in the UK."

Cllr Porter wouldn't be drawn into the reasons given by City Mayor Soulsby but said "he should be leading by example and making sure everything he does should be within the law. The Mayor needs to do the honourable thing and resign."
