Lib Dem’s worried about possible library closures

1 Mar 2011

Leicestershire Liberal Democrats have reacted to the Cabinet report on Libraries, Heritage and Arts Review.

Group Leader Simon Galton said: "We welcome the proposals for parts of the service, especially as it includes our preferred option of a trust model. This was something that we pressed to have included as it could deliver savings (e.g. from business rates) without affecting the service to the public.

However I am concerned that the proposals do not rule out the closure of local libraries across the County. We accept that the service needs to change but this review plus the lack of assurance that Libraries won't be closed is very worrying.

We still believe that whilst the community can help with supporting local services, libraries need to have professionally qualified staff to maintain the high standards that residents and users expect in Leicestershire."
