Lib Dems Challenge Tory MPs to Support Local Funding

17 Mar 2015

The Liberal Democrats are calling on Leicestershire's MPs to back an Early Day Motion in favour of fair funding for local government in order to protect Council services.

The motion acknowledges the £20bn in cuts that councils across the country have had to make so far and calls for the next government to engage in meaningful devolution of decision-making powers and funding to communities through councils.

Simon Galton said: "Each year when the Tories have made huge cuts to this Council's services, they've always complained that it's due to a lack of funding from central government.

The Tory administration have tried to assure us that they're working with their MPs to secure a better deal for Leicestershire County Council, but so far none of them have signed this motion.

There's still time - parliament will close on Monday. I call on them to sign the motion back the LGA's campaign as soon as possible."
