Lib Dems concern at true cost of Melton School fiasco

10 May 2010

Local Liberal Democrat Councillors have questioned the true cost of the failure of the Melton Schools reorganisation.

Lib Dem Group Leader Simon Galton said: "Whilst this issue appears to be coming to close, with the Conservative administration ignoring the wishes of local people, the true cost of this fiasco will need to be assessed and lessons learnt.

It is bad enough that local parents clearly wanted 3 small schools but now many pupils will only have a choice of one 1100 place school (i.e. John Fernley).

The key question which has still not been answered is when did the Conservatives on the Cabinet become aware that pupil forecasts used to support a three school model were flawed. We believe this information showing 300 fewer pupils, could and should have been used to develop the options for consultation. Instead many parents will be justified in feeling that they have been misled by the Conservatives.
