Local Liberal Democrats have today expressed surprise at Michael Howard's decision to visit Welford Road Police station. During the last Conservative Government Michael Howard was the Minister personally responsible for cutting the number of police despite his promise to deliver more.

Commenting on Michael Howard's visit later today Lib Dem Local Campaigner Cllr Parmjit Singh Gill said: "The Conservatives are clearly desperate they are fighting a campaign that is doomed to third place. Today's visit of Michael Howard will only illustrate the fact that he was personally responsible for cutting the number of police under the last Conservative Government.

"The people of Leicester will not be fooled by any Conservative promises on crime. They remember Michael Howard promising more police and delivering less. Desperate Conservative promises on crime will not disguise the fact that they are fighting a campaign they cannot win. In Leicester South the election will be a straight choice between the Liberal Democrats and Tony Blair's Labour, the Conservatives cannot win here."
