Liberal Democrat oppose Breaking the Barriers Closure

16 Nov 2010

Following a meeting of the County Councils cabinet, Cllr Bill Boulter has reiterated his opposition to the closure of the Breaking the Barriers and other employment services currently provided by the County Council for adults with learning difficulties.

Mr Boulter addressed the Cabinet on behalf of concerned parents, carers and the local community and urged them to protect this vital scheme.

Mr Boulter said: "I can appreciate these are tough times for everyone, but I see no sense in reducing the support and opportunity we offer to our vulnerable adults in a bid to save money on the vague hope that some social enterprise will come through and the officer report makes it quite clear that no interest has been received from a social enterprise to date during this review take it over.

I don't doubt that everyone is keen to ensure high standards and a good service, but we currently offer a great deal to those in need for £851,000. Part of that is offering fully supported two year NVQ's that actually give these adults an education they can use through out their lives - moving over to social enterprise model may not do this,

In my opinion no realistic alternatives have come forward and retaining this service within the County Council is the best way forward for adults with learning difficulties, and I will continue to oppose their closure."
