Liberal Democrat welcome Tories School Transport U-turn

21 Jul 2010

The Liberal Democrat Group on Leicestershire County Council has welcomed a U-turn by the Conservatives to give a temporary reprieve to a number of Home to school bus routes. In paper to next Tuesday's Cabinet, it is recommended that Home to school transport is not cut pending a Scrutiny review of the current eligibility criteria.

Simon Galton, Group Leader said: "I am pleased that the Cabinet is finally recognising the issues we raised back in February. We know that the families affected feel very strongly about this issue and were anxiously waiting to know whether the council will be providing school transport after the Summer Holiday's. The Liberal Democrats fully support their campaign and believe that this is just the sort of service that should be protected from spending cuts.

I suppose the old saying 'better late than never' is applicable, but we need to remain vigilant."
