Liberal Democrats Welcome Tory U-Turn on Council Tax
The Tory-run County Council today announced that it would be dropping its planned 1.5% rise in the Council Tax in favour of accepting the Government "freeze grant". The move found favour with the Liberal Democrats, who had called previously called for a Council Tax freeze when the draft budget was unveiled earlier in the month.
Simon Galton said, "We welcome this u-turn. When the Tories proposed a 1.5% rise in the draft budget, one of the changes we called for was for the Council to cancel the rise and accept the Government grant instead.
I'm glad the Tories have listened to us on this issue. It would have been madness raise Council tax on Leicestershire residents when the Coalition Government is offering of £2.4m to pay for it instead."
