Local Lib Dem reaction to General Election

7 May 2010

Local Liberal Democrat Councillors have reacted to the Hung Parliament.

Lib Dem Group Leader Simon Galton said: "obviously I am disappointed that the Liberal Democrats haven't made that much progress in terms of seats, but our share of the vote has increased which further shows the injustice of the current electoral system.

However our early analysis shows that Labour have come third and this, proves we are the true opposition to the Conservatives in Leicestershire and Rutland. We are the only party that can hold the Conservatives to account in local government, and these results prove our strong local base.

Our attention has always been to serve our local communities and protect key services from cuts; we are committed to doing so. We are grateful to the 90,000 people who voted for us across the County, and look to build upon our vote ahead of the Borough elections next year.
