The new centre, built by Leicester City Council with £759,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund has officially opened today.

Facilities at the centre include leaflets and information about the cemetery collected and indexed by the Friends of Welford Road Cemetery. For the last six years The Friends have recorded memorials, updated the cemetery maps, carried out research for enquirers, provided guided tours and lectures, and published a quarterly newsletter.

Lib Dem Castle Ward Cllr Debbie Almey who attended the opening ceremony said: "The centre is a fantastic building and a valuable contribution to the cemetery."

The centre will be open Friday to Sunday, 10am - 4pm.
