Anyone convicted of electoral fraud can face a 12-month prison sentence or fine.

At the local City Elections which are due to be held on May 3rd, tight security measures will be in place to ensure that all postal votes received are genuine and come from the correct registered voter.

Each postal voting form returned to the councils will be checked to make sure signatures and details match those on the postal voting registration forms which voters filled in earlier in the year.

Police will be told immediately of any irregularities, which they will then investigate. Anyone convicted of electoral fraud can face a 12-month prison sentence or fine.

Leicester pioneered postal vote signature checking.
