The presentation was part of the Leicester Irish Society's St Patrick's Day celebrations which takes place every year.

City Councillor Dale Keeling who represents the Freemen Ward said, "I was very pleased and honoured to be part of the Shamrock presentation to the Lord Mayor on St Patrick Day, which is a day of celebration for Irish people and non-Irish alike."

The shamrock was of important significance because St. Patrick's legend says he used it to introduce the holy trinity to Ireland. It is also a familiar plant that grows in Ireland and has become a symbol of both.
