PRESS RELEASE: Lib Dems pleased at Tory u-turn on Incinerator
Liberal Democrats have welcomed yet another u-turn by the Tories. In a report due before Cabinet on 29th July, the Tories will abandon their plans for an Incinerator.
Michael Wyatt CC, local member for Warren Hills, which includes the Bardon Ward said, "This is a fantastic result. Local communities have been voicing their opposition to this Tory backed incinerator for a very long time. We have had petitions and meetings, but the loss of government money has finally killed off this dangerous and unwanted development. I would like to personally thank all the residents in Bardon who backed our campaign to stop the Tories from allowing an incinerator to be built so close to a residential area, which could of meant properties being de-valued and people's health being put a risk."
Leader of the opposition Simon Galton: "The Liberal Democrats have always opposed large scale Incineration, and we prefer the use of newer technologies such as Mechanical Biological Treatment and anaerobic digestion, we therefore welcome the fact that the loss of PFI money has finally persuaded the Tories to do a u-turn an abandon the process. It is clear that residents oppose the notion of large scale incineration and we were particularly concerned that the PFI process was secretive, unaccountable to the local community and gave too much power to the waste companies. We repeatedly told the Tories this, but they never seem to really grasp the danger for Leicestershire."
