Statement from Liberal Democrat Group on David Parsons

10 Feb 2012

The events of the last week have moved significantly with further allegations regarding Mr Parsons conduct and integrity being revealed. We have been increasingly concerned by Mr Parsons apparent disregard for the allegations considered by the Corporate Governance committee on Monday and the referral of the matter to the Standards Committee.

It is clear that the bravery shown by the Whistleblower in making these allegations has been central to the exposure of Mr Parsons' lack of judgement. His ongoing refusal to act in an open and transparent way and comply with reasonable requests for full disclosure by the Council has eroded his credibility as a Leader of the Council. Because of this, Mr Boulter referred the matter as a complaint to the standards committee because of his belief that Mr Parsons had broken the Members Code of Conduct by his actions.

Dr Sarah Hill, Deputy Leader said:"We have always maintained that that the Conservative group must face up to these allegations and take action. We fully support those Cabinet Members brave enough to take action to request that the Leader resign.

The Liberal Democrat group believes that the additional allegations, combined with Mr Parsons attitude regarding those allegations and his lack of transparency have eroded the reputation of the Council and the office of Leader of the Council. We therefore strongly believe that Mr Parsons should resign immediately as his position is no longer tenable."
