Drinkers have been gathering on the grounds of Leicester Cathedral to escape the street drinking ban imposed on the near by main roads and public spaces, so the Cathedral along with it's surrounding streets have now been declared no-drinking zones.

Now, anyone caught drinking in the area covered by the extended zone can be handed an on-the-spot fine of £50. If they refuse to hand their can or bottle over to police when asked to do so, they could also be arrested.

Lib Dem City Centre Councillor Debbie Almey supports the ban and said, "The extension of the street drinking ban is very welcome, it will go along way into creating a better atmosphere around that area.
