£19 million street improvement scheme has resumed today.

Work on Leicester's £19 million street improvement scheme has resumed today.

City Highways, will start to lay new granite slabs on the footways and lay-bys on Halford Street - and begin to prepare Market Street for its new high quality surface.

The Market Street scheme will feature the same mid-grey granite that has been used on Gallowtree Gate, but smaller paving slabs will be used.

Polished pink granite seating, new bins, cycle racks and lamp columns will line up along the Fenwick side, while small up-lighters will be installed on the opposite side of the street.

The Halford Street scheme is due to be finished by early March, while Market Street is scheduled for completion by the end of June.

Gallowtree Gate was the first street to be refurbished as part of the city council's £19 million Streets & Spaces programme - and by 2008, most of the city's main shopping streets will have been transformed.
